The main thing that will often distinguish the successful candidate from the others is their preparation for the interview.
It is absolutely key to thoroughly research the firm you are having an interview with. Good places to start are the firm’s website and its brochure. Many firms will have their brochures available electronically via their websites or alternatively you can find some firms’ brochures in the ‘Brochures’ section of Law Careers.Net by clicking here – many of these are aimed at the trainee solicitor recruitment process but are still good resources for getting information about the firm and its culture.
However, merely reading through the firms’ marketing materials isn’t enough. You must also be up to date with the latest news about the firm by regularly reading, and searching, the legal press. If you have access to the hard copies then start making a habit of reading them when they come out. You can also search the archives of the legal press websites to catch up on historically news about the firm you have an interview with.
To get information on recent deals that certain firms have been involved with you can check out the ‘Deals’ section of Law Careers.Net. Click here to read more.
As well thoroughly researching the firm you are to be interviewed by, you should also be putting some time in considering, and preparing skeleton answers to, common interview questions and any other questions you might be able to anticipate the firm asking you based on your own specific CV and the current legal news.
